Update on Proposed Snow Camp Zoning Ordinance

By Ron Spinhoven

The current draft and map of the Zoning ordinance is now available for public view on the County planning board website. (Links are listed below.)

In a couple of recent meetings,  I proposed to the planning department that all future Class 3 Heavy Industry be “not permitted” in Snow Camp and that these provisions be included in the ordinance.

In addition, I attended the most recent Planning Board meeting on December 9th and urged that coal ash waste be prohibited as land fill. According to the NC Coal Ash Management Act (CAMA) Quarries and Mines can be used as coal ash depositories and are not subject to local permitting. Therefore, the state can designate a mine site and local government would be excluded from the process.

There was some confusion and mis information discussed at the meeting but Newlin board member, Rodney Cheek agreed saying “We need to get out front of this.” Lets show support for Mr. Cheek’s lead on this! Here’s how:

A 2nd and possibly final public workshop is scheduled for January 5th from 5:30-7:00 at the Sylvian School at 7718 Sylvan Road. Please attend and voice your demand that these provisions be included in the Zoning Ordinance.
