Friends and Neighbors,
We have important updates to share after the most recent Alamance County Commissioners meeting that was held on Monday 06/20/2022, as well as some other important items to report!
Just days before the Commissioners meeting, Alamance Aggregates (AA) held a private open house event for the press, clients, associates and local dignitaries, in which the AA co-owner Drew Boggs declared that they want to be “good corporate citizens”. The event included 3 (unnamed) Alamance County Commissioners and officials from the Snow Camp Fire Department. During this event, Drew Boggs stated that Alamance Aggregates has paid $16,500 in fines to the County. The quarry’s legal counsel, Tom Terrell, shared a video recording of a blast and explained it is not really an explosion, but more of a ‘floosh’ that lasts for about two seconds”. Neighboring property owners, and community members over two miles away who can hear the explosions, beg to differ.
We are working “behind the scenes” and have better clarity now on what we need to do to preserve our rural heritage. We are working to establish lines of communication with both the county staff and the Board of Commissioners. We are researching legal matters that may come into play in the future. And we are exploring opportunities to collaborate with other organizations that have a stake in the issues we are facing in Snow Camp with the threat of even more polluting heavy industry setting up in our beautiful rural residential – community.
During Monday’s commissioners’ meeting, three Snow Camp Community Action Network (SnowCampCAN) representatives addressed concerns about proposed changes to the Alamance County noise ordinance of 2019, which had significant flaws and apparently was not enforceable as written/revised by the former county attorney. Several revisions had been proposed including one that would have allowed noxious noise between the hours of Monday through Saturday from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. By speaking out on behalf of our community, the first motion made by Commissioner Turner was passed to limit noise outside the hours of Monday through Friday 7AM-5PM , a win for Snow Camp!(Chairman Paisley had offered an opposing motion to set operating hours from 6 am through 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday and then cast the only dissenting vote in the 4-1 outcome.) With quotes from Commissioner Bill Lashley in The Alamance News, it appears the Commissioners are listening to us. Although this ordinance does not have a full set of teeth, it allows all who feel any industry is in violation, to lodge a complaint to the Sheriff’s office(contact details below). So get on the phone and also write and complain as many times as you feel there is a violation. There needs to be a record of violations.
