The following was submitted by Snow Camp resident, Gary Ulicny, PhD:
At last week’s Planning Board Meeting a motion was made to scrap the entire Snow Camp Zoning plan. It was clear that the concept of zoning is severely impacting the passage of the Small Area Plan. The current plan has put many restrictions that have not gone well with many in the Community who turned out in force to oppose it. If it is scrapped, we will revert to the current Heavy Industry Ordinance which is simply a checklist. The way it is currently written, every Snow Camp resident could turn out and oppose a heavy industry project, but if all the boxes are checked neither the Planning Board or the Commissioners can stop it.
We think that most of us are concerned, primarily, with stopping intrusive, noxious heavy industry rather than if your parking lot is paved or whether existing businesses would need to rezone if they want to expand. Fortunately, the motion to scrap the plan was defeated, but only by one vote (6 to 5) and the Planning Board agreed to meet this Wednesday and continue discussions.
It is critical that we have a good turnout and that people who support limiting heavy industry speak up and comment. Please come out to 124 Elm St. in Graham on Wednesday 1/19 at 7:00 pm and make your voice heard. Make sure you get there early and that your comments focus on limiting heavy industrial development and not on zoning, so we can stop another asphalt plant, paper mill, cement plant, racetrack etc. from locating in Snow Camp.
Gary Ulicny, PhD is a leader in the fight to stop the Quarry and a staunch proponent of limiting further Heavy Industry in Snow Camp.
